The faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology is one of the world’s largest faculties devoted entirely to aerospace engineering. It covers the whole spectrum of aerospace engineering subjects. In aeronautics, the faculty covers subjects ranging from aerodynamics and flight propulsion to structures and materials and from control and simulation to air transport and operations. In astronautics, topics include astrodynamics, space missions and space systems engineering.

The Aerospace Structures and Materials (ASM) department at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of Delft University of Technology is a world leader in the design of new materials, smart material combinations and structural concepts for aerospace applications. The 4 sections in the department, Novel Aerospace Materials (NovAM), Aerospace Structures and Computational Mechanics (ASCM) and Structural Integrity & Composites (SIC) and Aircraft Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) with their Structures and Materials Laboratory (DASML), focus on complementary aspects and via synergy the sections have a common goal: new multi-functional materials and structures for aerospace industries. ASM department is also closely working together with SAM XL (Smart Advanced Manufacturing XL, located close to the University), a collaborative research centre where technology is being developed, demonstrated, and de-risked for automated manufacture of large-size lightweight composite parts for aircraft, wind turbine blades, spacecraft and maritime applications.

Professor Big Data, AI & ML for Manufacturing (Aerospace)

Circumstances:

Currently the aircraft industry is moving to more integrated cost-efficient manufacturing and higher production rates in cooperation with risk-sharing partners and a global supply chain.  Highly integrated smart structures produced efficiently and at low-cost require much improved and new methods of integration of underlying technologies in materials, structures, production methods and flexible combinations thereof. Also Additive manufacturing (AM) is entering a new phase. Multiple processes exist and are being further optimized. The new type of research focuses on the new materials that are possible or even required for AM. To develop such new materials, the idea is to use Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML)  and Quantum Computing (QC).

Your Mission:

To develop and deliver an appealing education in the field of digitization in an aerospace context, develop research which appeals to aerospace students and by doing so will give a boost to the development of new materials and smart manufacturing (in cooperation with SAM XL), the Delft University of Technology is looking for a Professor Big Data, AI & ML for Manufacturing who is willing to become a member of the highly motivated faculty team.

Your Luggage

The candidate should have an outstanding research record and an academic background in one or more of the related expertise’s (Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning), preferably gained in a Aerospace surrounding.  An established international research and professional network as well as a good scientific track record are expected.  Experience in teaching at academic level and advising & coaching of PhD students is essential. Experience with acquisition of funding for (collaborative) research projects in both fundamental and applied technology is preferable. Proven management, communication and people skills as well as good command of English are mandatory.
